Stunning Singers Hill Synagogue

Foundation Chief Executive Michael Mail travelled to Birmingham to visit the stunning Grade II Singers Hill synagogue in the city’s centre.

The synagogue was built in 1856 at a time when Birmingham was being transformed into an industrial powerhouse.  The Jewish community played its own role in the story of the growth of Birmingham, and synagogue members included prominent figures in the city’s development.

Michael was hosted by Rabbi Yossi Jacobs – a fellow Glaswegian!  He also met members of the wider synagogue team, both volunteers and professionals, who help manage the site including the thousands of visitors, especially school groups, who visit each year.

Michael presented the work of the Foundation ensuring that historic synagogues in danger are preserved.  Rabbi Jacobs explained how the site is being currently maintained, and the impressive array of activities that are arranged for the synagogue’s members, demonstrating the ongoing vibrancy of the community.

The Foundation was delighted to visit this real gem of a synagogue in the heart of the Midlands of Britain.
